- This play is a humorous tale of an honest man taken in by the schemes of a con man. Orgon will believe no one who warns hike about the devious Tartuffe who presents himself as a pious, deeply religious man. When Orgon finally sees Tartuffe for what he is, the man's schemes seem to have succeeded.
This comedy is a warning about deception, but it also points out that there are people who are sincerely devout.
I recommend this play. - It is funny and tasteful. Hilarious and very sarcastic. satirical. I can go on and on. You have to read it to realize what i am talking about. It is a play about a cunning man fooling another man by being pious. Throughout the history people treated very well and respected religious people and this book is a great example of it. I can tell you similar things, in different settings, occurred in my childhood where i witnessed these sort of men took advantage of other people. In this story everybody else seemed to know what kind of man Tartuffe is except Orlon but in my real stories everybody seemed to believe more ridiculous situations. such as somebody was so religious and loved by god that he could fly etc. read it. It is great.
- I was reading an essay that referred to Moliere as an example a couple of times, so decided that I needed a little context. I expected something really outdated and was pleasantly surprised. This play has actually worn fairly well and was pretty amusing. I found it easy to picture how it would look in a play and some of it is fairly funny.
Someone complained that this translation does not rhyme. I am fine with that. I think you can get some weird translations trying to make it rhyme, since you may need to stretch to find the word or mess with the syntax. This was a very readable translation.
Overall, a great introduction to Moliere. - The beauty and mastery of Richard Wilbur's quill never ceases to amaze. And Moliere's masterpiece is as current today as it was centuries ago. This along with The Misanthrope, The Learned Ladies and The School for Wives should be on the bookshelf (or on the ...oh, you youngsters and your hi-tech devices) of every student of classical acting.
I must admit I am chuckling at some of the "armchair scholars" who are rating this treasure "one star" attacking the play itself. Sorry kids, this is an undisputed classic of Western Literature. As they say, "time will tell" and this has more than stood the test of time. I recently wrote a review of this version in performance, certainly worth checking out. Tartuffe (Broadway Theatre Archive) - Son needed this book and several others to continue his college education. He will receive his graduate degree this spring, so the information was improtant and helpful. Prices were very reasonable and service prompt!
- Good read. I do not normally read plays but I finished this. It does read very easy. Definitely recommend.
- The correct version for a college class. Funny play. Discussing it with the prof and got lots more out of it. A quick read- I read it all in two sittings.
- Another fine title in the Dover thrift editions series.
