Siamo negli ultimi anni del 1800 e a Genova, arenato sulla spiaggia davanti alla Chiesa di San Pietro alla Foce, viene trovato un brigantino che giace inclinato su un fianco a seguito di una forte tempesta. Non c'è segno di vita intorno all'Esmeralda e ai carabinieri, che sono sopraggiunti, non resta altro da fare che andare a bordo per verificare la presenza e lo stato dell'equipaggio. Saliti sull'imbarcazione con grande difficoltà, possono solo constatare che è deserta, se si esclude la presenza di un cadavere nella cabina del comandante, chiusa a chiave dall'interno. Chi è? Come è morto? Perché non c'è nessun altro? Che fine ha fatto l'equipaggio? Cosa trasportava la nave? Da dove veniva? Dove era diretta?
Queste sono le domande a cui il maresciallo capo Luciano Bedin è chiamato a rispondere.
Coinvolti nell'indagine per le loro competenze sono Vincenzo Da Passano giudice istruttore e Enrico Maria Rizzi Guérin procuratore generale, mentre un giornalista, amico del maresciallo e nipote della patologa, la dottoressa Cecilia d'Albertis, segue le vicende per il “Secolo XIX”.
Le notizie riguardanti il brigantino vengono trovate nel diario di bordo diretto a Genova da Luanda con un carico di caffè. Mentre l'identità della salma viene svelata dal procuratore di affari Alberto Merello, che si è occupato di armare la nave per conto dei proprietari. Si tratta del capitano Attilio Rosso. L'ispettore sanitario che esegue l'autopsia, la dottoressa Cecilia d'Albertis, stabilisce che la morte del comandante è avvenuta per avvelenamento, ma, sulla natura del veleno e sulla maniera in cui possa essere venuto in contatto con il capitano, non riesce a dare risposte certe. Sarà l'intervento di un esperto inglese chiamato in causa dalla dottoressa a chiarirlo, ma ci vorrà del tempo.
Non si è ancora risolto il caso del comandante dell'Esmeralda, che altri avvenimenti accadono in rapida successione. Il faccendiere Alberto Merello viene trovato ucciso nel suo scagno e Fiona Canepa, la moglie del suo impiegato Aurelio Tagliaferri, sparisce misteriosamente.
Un avvenimento mondano nella villa di Lady Margherita Brooke di Sarawack a cui partecipano ospiti illustri come lo scrittore Emilio Salgari e il console di Gran Bretagna Sir Matthew Hamilton Palmer fornirà l'occasione al maresciallo per cogliere un indizio che, poco alla volta lo condurrà a sciogliere tutti gli enigmi. Molti personaggi affollano una Genova misteriosa, sotterranea e ottocentesca e contribuiscono, ciascuno per la propria parte, a comporre un grande acquerello in cui la città è grande protagonista. La presenza dello scrittore Emilio Salgari fornisce l'occasione di ricordare la sua permanenza a Genova nel 1898 e offre lo spunto per conoscerlo meglio.

- I love to read and taste food stories because of the hidden promise of more than a combination of various ingredients. If you know how to read correctly a recipe, you can create incredible stories. Think only about the stories of how different ingredients were introduced into various geographical spaces and the full history of their appropriation by different cultures.
In his collection of essays about 'Eating, Reading and Race', Naben Ruthnum analysed the case of 'curry' which he proclaims '(...) isn't real. Its range of differentiations, edible and otherwise, rob it of a stable existence. Curry is a leaf, a process, a certain kind of gravy with uncertain ingredients surrounding a starring meat or vegetable. It's an elevating crust baked around previously bland food stuff, but it's also an Indian fairy tale composed by cooks, Indians, emigres, colonists, eaters, readers and writers'. I personally haven't cooked curry - yet - and I have a very limited taste experience therefore I can hardly go to far when it comes to the eating part of the stories.
However, I can trace various interpretations and contextualizations acquired through the literary representations. Ruthnum outlines the requested literary conundrum assigned to the novels by and about that part of the world. 'Food and literature are the most definint elements of the Indian diaspora on the small world I've built around myself as a brown adult in the West. Curry's the vehicle I use to look at how we eat, read and think of ourselves as a miniature mass-culture within the greater West. Curry's just as fake and as real as a great novel, as a sense of identity'.
The book is a collection of essays, with interesting references of authors exploring the limits of food and identity and the pressure to find yourself outside those limitations of the 'India's of the mind'. 'South Asian Writers is an identity, not just a pair of adjectives and a noun, and it's an identity that establishes a tacit promise to an audience that is seeking it, whether the author intended it or not'.
It is almost impossible to think that this mindset will change any time soon, but the efforts to deconstruct this reality are small breaks into the wall of imposed creativity. Think about how much potential there is when the challenge of offering different streams of identity is really taken, word by word.

- I was thinking of taking a road trip in the next year or two, so I thought I’d start by buying a guide to the city in which I was born. I was still quite young when we moved away, so I still don’t feel like I know everything there is to know, by any means. I’m just not sure if the DK guides are as good as they used to be. The entries seem a lot shorter than in the past and some of the photographs are really pretty tiny now. I also seem to remember almost every entry used to have an accompanying photo, but that seems to no longer be the case here. This volume seemed pretty slim for a major American city. Before I knew it, I was already done flipping through the entire book. The information just felt pretty skimpy, overall. For instance, I glanced over the shopping listings, but I only really saw the major national chains listed that are in every American city. Nothing really unique was mentioned that would make you want to go out of the way while you were there. I did notice some typos. I felt the book was a little too expensive for these mistakes to have gone unnoticed. Even if I wasn’t a native, I don’t think I would find this book really helpful, honestly. I really wanted to like this book, but I ultimately ended up sending it back.
Since I wrote this review, I picked up some other Chicago guides. One I really liked was the Moon Chicago travel guide. It was more comprehensive and more along the lines of what I was looking for. - We are faithful users of the DK Eyewitness guides...usually I go for their Top 10 guides, but for Chicago I decided to go for the full guide. I'm originally from Chicago, and since I'm already familiar with the city and we were spending a full week there, I wanted to get a little more detail, which I did! As always, the guide gave a great, quick overview of the history of the city but also of different landmarks, etc. Surprisingly, we used the map at the back of the guide most of all this trip (our feet are still recovering!).
Totally loved the Chicago (and other DK guides) and would absolutely recommend it! - I LOVE DK Travel Guides. They cover everything you want to see in a new place with narrative including history, price, and location. They include pull out maps and full color pictures. I always buy one when I am going to a new place so I don't waste my time trying to figure out what I should go see. They have helped me plan many enjoyable vacations.
- I love Eyewitness guides in general (always look to see if there is one available for any new city I’m visiting). The reason they are so key is because of the very brief yet thorough way they introduce the city to a newbie. The Chicago guide is no exception. I love the quick history it gives from the founding of the city to current day. Paragraphs are brief and pointed. It makes you feel like a native in no time. These gems are key to understanding the culture and makes the trip so much more enjoyable. The guide to the museums and the buildings include beautiful pictures and even maps of inside the building so you can become familiar even before arrival! It was my go-to reference for my week long trip to Chicago and can’t wait for the next!
- The reason I ordered this guide was because it was the most up to date offering at the time! I've always liked DK Eyewitness books on history, science etc.! This travel book lived up to my expectations! The layout, maps and succinct descriptions are well done and the photos give the guide that extra punch that is absent in other similar texts! I'd enjoy perusing the book even if I weren't going to Chicago!

- I enjoy the Eyewitness Travel guides because they spend pages on the museums and art that I am interested in, rather than on whats "kool" or on nightlife. I have several from past trips and enjoy looking at the photos as souvenirs of the trip. The Chicago one has a good section of the Art Institution of Chicago and on how the Metro and the Loop work. There is also good information about the architecture.

- My main complaint about this book is that as a whole, this book is repetitive. I understand that some of the chapters are other studies printed elsewhere and that this is a compilation of these studies by the author, but the result is a slightly-frustrating read due to the repeating information. The topic, however, deserves our attention. The genocide in Guatemala during the Guatemalan civil war is an ugly part of the history of the USA, and I think few of our citizens understand the violent legacy that we encouraged and funded through the oppressively violent and corrupt Guatemalan army. It's shameful. If you know nothing about the topic, then this book would be an appropriate place to start but be warned that some of the material is heavily repeated throughout the text.
- Great book even though it covers a pretty heavy subject. I personally read it for a class but if you enjoy international history is give it a shot.
- A most have resource for those students and experts of the Guatemalan history, human rights and Latin American issues. Dr. Sanford's research is brilliant!
