"One of my first thoughts as I started to read, was others I know that need this book - then , as if reading my mind, he said it was for me, not others. So I read it for me and am now waiting for the paperback to go over more slowly and do the worksheets supplied. (I was telling my wife how great the ideas are, so she started reading it. She then told me how I needed the book, lol).

It gives help for deep thought, along with self depreciating humor. I was reading about 1:30 AM the other night, when I got to the rubber band challenge to control negative thoughts. I laughed, and could not quit laughing. Afraid I would wake my wife, I shut the book and crawled into bed beside her - started to think about it and laughter caught me again.

I'm not an addict - my life is messed up and needs help in other ways. This inspired compass can help us all. I look forward to thinking about and adapting much from the inspired ideas.

Live One Life A Guide to Recovery from Trauma Drama and Other Addictive Behaviors Dr David W Patterson 9781795502894 Books Reviews

  • As David so powerfully shares in this eye-opening, heart-touching book, 'Change is an inside job. We must start with ourselves.'

"What makes this book so engaging is that Dr. Patterson speaks from experience. Painful experience. Been there. Done that. Survived. Here's how.

"When the pain from his own life choices became greater than his fear of the proven solutions, he began his successful journey to recovery.

"The honesty, humility, and hope found throughout this book can help anyone struggling with addiction or any weakness, to begin the battle again and win."
  • I have read other literature concerning overcoming addictions, and Dr. David Patterson’s book stands out. Why? It is not overly technical, and the text is engaging and easily understandable to a lay audience - the very people this book was meant to reach! Dr. Patterson discusses his own personal journey battling and overcoming addictions, and his story of perseverance and overcoming is inspirational. Here are a few gems of wisdom gained by experience that David shares with the reader

    - "Come to terms with the past in an effort to improve the future."

    - "Life is determined by choices. Whether you think life is meaningless or meaningful; you are right. You are the author. You choose how you are going to Live One Life."

    - "The good news was that for the first time in my life I was consciously taking full responsibility for me. The bad news was that for the first time in my life I had to take full responsibility for me, and I was in way over my head."

    - "I have learned that you can ride a little hope for a long time if you nurture it…."

I highly recommend this book - to those not only experiencing addiction, but the people in their support circle, counselors, advisors, and anyone else who wants to gain greater insight about this important subject that touches so many individuals and families.
  • With nuggets of knowledge strewn throughout, even if you only take away parts of it to incorporate into your life and relationships, you will find a less stress in your daily activities.

I didn't realize that I WAS putting on a different persona for different situations. After it was pointed out in the book I started to notice myself doing it and readjust accordingly.

"You are the most adaptable, complex creature in the universe. You have unlimited potential with endless opportunities."

It's pointed and no nonsense information like this that gives hope when things might not be going as you have planned and with the Compass model, you can find what you need to do to get back on track.

With it's personal background story of trials and tribulations, the author intertwines his personal path to become a better person with a consise framework that's been honed to provide a guided path to follow.

Even if you're not struggling, or don't know you're struggling, with something addictive, this book can help point it out and show you a system to help you overcome.

Personally, I think the book version is great as it incorporates a workbook style usage where you can write in it. Because once you write it down, you have something to keep looking at to see how your progress is coming along.

  • I’ve read several self help books and the difference with David’s was the impact. It is written in such an inviting and simple way that you feel you are sitting there talking to him. But the emotions and feelings it brought out were inspirational. We all have addictions to varying degrees and this brought to light for me that we could all use this guidance in our Iives. I am sending this book to family and friends that can use it’s honest inspired guidance to improve their lives and truly “live one life”. Thank you David for sharing this with us.
  • I have read many a self-help/self-empowerment/personal growth book, and what sets this book apart for me is the conversational tone and how practical and applicable the content is. I haven't finished reading it yet, but I'm genuinely engaged and eager to do so (which is not always the case once I get past the first chapter of some books in the genre). As a life coach myself, and having worked as a mental health social worker in the addiction and crisis fields, I can say this book is very timely and honest in its approach to some very hard topics. At the same time, you don't have to be (consciously) involved in either of these fields to get the value of the read. It's worth the time, even if you think you don't need these lessons. Probably ESPECIALLY if you think you don't need them. )
